Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of intellectual decline and dementia in the elderly, affecting approximately one out of 10 people over age 65 and nearly half over age 85. The condition affects women more frequently than men, and it is characterized by shrinkage of the frontal or temporal lobes and nerve cell death in several areas of the brain, leading to a loss of key mental functions such as memory, learning and concentration.

In recent years acupuncture has been shown to have significant therapeutic effects in the treatment of Alzheimer’s. In several key studies, scientists have found that acupuncture can increase a patient’s verbal and motor skills as well as improving cognitive function. Levels of anxiety and depression were also significantly reduced in the test subjects.

On a personal level I have seen how beneficial acupuncture can be in the treatment of Alzheimer’s. Over the years I have treated a number of Alzheimer’s patients and the changes can be quite remarkable. The improvement in cognitive function and mood is significant. Patients become noticeably more chatty and upbeat.
